Awkward Gaddafi Family Photos of the Day: Sifting through a ransacked media room inside Col. Gaddafi’s Bab al-Aziziya compound, New York Times photojournalist Tyler Hicks stumbled upon an incredibly rare sight: The private life of Libya’s brutal dictator.

Strewn about videotapes and paperwork were Gaddafi family photos showcasing the lighter side of a dangerous man. “It’s usually the typical handshake photo,” says Hicks. “But mixed among all those images were these moments where he let his guard down and we actually saw something other than those staged moments.”
